The project is part of the East African Community's (EAC) interventions to reduce maritime accidents, save lives, improve safety and ensure efficient and cost-effective communications to communities along the shores of Lake Victoria. It addresses key issues of transportation safety and planning on Lake Victoria, and promotes the development of transportation and trade on Lake Victoria. Specifically, the project will establish a marine communications system for safety on Lake Victoria, including a marine safety coordination centre and search and rescue centres on the Lake, and will produce a marine transportation strategy for the EAC. Its implementation period is expected to be four years with an estimated total cost of UA 25.95 million (USD 36,583,822).
The development objective of the project is to promote increased traffic and trade on Lake Victoria through the improvement of marine transportation infrastructure, including marine communications, navigational safety aids and search and rescue services. Specifically and briefly, the project will establish a marine communications system for safety on Lake Victoria, including a marine safety coordination centre and search and rescue centres on the Lake, and will produce a marine transportation strategy for the East African Community (EAC).
The main beneficiaries are the communities along the shores of Lake Victoria, whose socio-economic well-being will be improved through the expansion of the scope of telecommunications networks, which will increase business efficiency through the value-added services that will be offered.
