Project General Description

The study on the maintenance and sustainable management of social infrastructure in the eight member countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) is part of the Bank Group's efforts to help regional member countries equip themselves with social infrastructure (buildings and equipment of the public health; education and social protection sector). This study aims to carry out diagnostic and identify the strategies and actions that can contribute to improving sustainability and quality of these infrastructures in the countries concerned, namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. It will be conducted in two phases which are as follows: (i) a first phase aimed to carry out a diagnostic of the situation and determine the options to be considered for the drawing up of a plan of action; (ii) a second phase whose goal is to validate the various options identified with a view to formulating national strategies, performance indicators, a plan of action and terms of its operation, definition of actions to be included systematically in the future social infrastructural projects and identify support projects or programmes. The total cost of the study is estimated at UA 1.62 million.

Project Objectives

The sectoral objective aims to contribute to the improvement of access to basic, sustainable and quality social services for the people of the UEMOA countries. The specific objective of the study is to ensure a more sustainable management of social infrastructure, through the formulation and implementation of community and national policies and strategies, as well as plans of action and appropriate support projects or programmes.

The main beneficiaries are the governments as well as the populations of WAEMU member countries.
