Project General Description

The African Philantropy Alliance (AVPA) is designed to increase the flow of capital into social investments in Africa and ensure that this capital is deployed as effectively and innovatively as possible for maximum social impact. The Knowledge Center is a critical part of the AVPA that focuses directly on increasing the effectiveness of social impact investors in deploying their capital to strengthen and scale small and medium social enterprises (SMSE’s) on the continent. The project is expected to generate two core outcomes: (1) Increased capacity and effectiveness of social investors; (2) Improved access to capital deployed by social investors for promising social enterprises in Africa. It comprises two components, namely: (i) Knowledge Production and Dissemination; (ii) Capacity Building and Development.

Project Objectives

The goal of this project is to support the development and operationalization of the AVPA Knowledge Center’s capabilities and capacity, for the purpose of advancing the mission of the AVPA. Its specific objectives are twofold: to develop knowledge and information products that have high value to social investors and to build and deploy a suite of products and services, e.g. training and capacity building activities and web-based tools and platforms, that actually equip social investors to realize their aspirations for social impact.

Beneficiaries

The project’s direct beneficiaries will be organizations and individuals involved in philanthropy and social investment activities including venture philanthropy funds, social investors, grantmaking foundations, impact investing funds, private equity firms, and venture capital funds. The secondary beneficiaries will be organizations across the social entrepreneurship ecosystem: SMSEs focused on social impact, as well as supporting organizations such as accelerators and incubators. The ultimate beneficiaries will be entrepreneurs delivering social goods and services and local disadvantaged communities benefitting from these services.
