This project is providing US $ 886,886 in support of African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) to build a credible local capacity for policy-oriented research and to promote links between research and policy in the region. AERC was established in 1988 as a public not-for-profit organization devoted to advanced policy research and training. Within AERC'S planned programme of activities during the 2001-2005 period, the Grant is expected to support its research and training activities. The Grant will further assist in ensuring that activities in research and training are being extended beyond macroeconomics to address key questions relating to poverty, income distribution, and labor market topics: to tong-term economic growth in Africa: and to the African economy in the global context.
The principal objective is to strengthen local capacity for conducting independent, rigorous inquiry into problems pertinent to the management of economies in sub-Saharan Africa. The Grant will assist the training side of the AERC which has seen the graduation of over 800 Masters degree in economics from its Collaborative MA Programme, implemented by 20 universities in the sub-region.
