The Eskom Renewable Energy Project was conceived as part of a research program aimed at studying South Africa's renewable energy resources and identifying appropriate alternative solutions to meet the renewable energy needs of renewable energies. electricity needs of the country. The program was launched because of the growing demand for electricity in South Africa and the need to diversify the energy mix of Eskom. The project is expected to promote knowledge of wind and solar technologies in South Africa and provide an opportunity to identify implementation, implementation and operational management issues related to these technologies. It has two main sub-projects or components: the Sere Wind Power Project and the Upington Solar Concentration Project. The expected results of implementation of the present will be measured using the following indicators: (i) increase in the supply of renewable energy; (ii) direct greenhouse gas emissions avoided; (iii) number of jobs created; and (iv) investments in renewable energy projects through funding from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).
The project's development objective is to facilitate the accelerated development of large-scale renewable energy generation capacity in support of South Africa's long-term strategy for carbon reduction.
The direct beneficiaries of the subprojects will be the populations and enterprises established in the said provinces and communes, and the local tourist economy which will be strongly stimulated. It should be noted that the energy produced will supply the national electricity grid and benefit the entire country through the provision of clean and reliable energy.
