The Project has 3 components: (1) Support to Cashew Value Chain with 3 sub-components, (i) irrigation infrastructure for cashew nurseries and clone gardens, (ii) cashew plantation rejuvenation and establishment, and (iii) infrastructure for cashew-processing and marketing; (2) Capacity Building with 3 sub-components, (i) training, (ii) technical support, and (iii) matching fund; and (3) Project Management with 2 sub-components, (i) project coordination, and (ii) monitoring and evaluation. The Project cost is USD 55.42 million. The CIDP will further strengthen and consolidate gains achieved from similar agriculture-related value chain development interventions.
The development objective is to contribute to economic growth and food security. The Project objective is to contribute to the country’s poverty reduction and improved household incomes through improved cashew production, processing and marketing. Enhanced household incomes will lead to improved household food security. The Project will (i) increase cashew tree productivity and production, (ii) contribute to improved household income and food security, (iii) increase foreign xchange earnings from cashew products, and (iii) improve rural employment for men, women and youths.
The primary beneficiaries of the Project are smallholder cashew farmers/producers and processors (farmer groups and Private Sector). The Project will directly benefit 60,000 smallholder farmers including 30,000 (50%) women and 7,000 youths, each planting 1 ha (100 cashew trees). The labour input for the farming operations is equivalent to 25,000 jobs. However, the Project will generate about 6,000 full time jobs (3,000 of which will be for rural women and 1,000 for youths) in cashew nursery, production, processing and marketing operations. The Project, through Matching Fund facility, will promote ownership by small-scale entrepreneurs of at least 10 cashew tree nurseries and 4 cashew processing facilities.
