Project General Description

The proposed operation is a grant of UA 350,000 from the Middle Income Countries Technical Assistance Fund (MIC TAF) to the Republic of Zambia for the design of a sustainable, technically feasible, economically and financially sound, gender sensitive and climate resilient project for improving Lusaka city’s water supply infrastructure project. The MIC TAF Grant shall be used to finance the consultancy services for the Feasibility Study and detailed designs including an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and associated Environmental Social Management Plan and Resettlement Action Plan. The study will therefore facilitate the smooth preparation thorough data generation for the proposed project and therefore increase the chances of achieving its objectives when implemented. The outputs from the study will support readiness and preparation of the USD 205 million Lusaka City Water Supply Improvement Project which is planned for 2024.

Project Objectives

The project objective is to undertake feasibility and detailed designs, including all relevant activities required for the development of a Bankable Investment project for Water Supply Improvement Project in Lusaka City. The proposed project will increase “accessibility to reliable safe water and will support the GOZ’s water sector development by providing effective solutions towards the unreliable and unsafe water which has had grave negative impacts on public health and limited economic development especially in densely populated and low-income areas of Lusaka.

Beneficiaries

This study focuses on improvement of water supply to Lusaka as overall improvement of sanitation in the City is being undertaken through the ongoing Lusaka Sanitation Program. The development goal of the Project resulting from the study is to contribute to improved access to safe and sufficient water supply in Lusaka city and surrounding areas for 92% of the population (4,953,000 persons) by 2035 through the construction of sustainable water production, supply and distribution facilities, thereby contributing to better living conditions and sustainable human development.
