The Education for Sustainable Development in Mineral Resource Management project at the University of Zambia is a funding operation that aims to contribute to youth employment and inclusive economic growth through the sustainable exploitation of mineral resources ( SMRD). To achieve the objectives of the project, two major actions are envisaged: a) the capacity building of the University of Zambia (UNZA) to enable it to independently provide a master's program in SMRD, which will pass through the improvement of the knowledge and skills of six professors through short courses offered by the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Stellenbosch; and (b) support for postgraduate training for 75 students under the current master's program, jointly provided by UNZA (in Zambia) and UCT and Stellenbosch (both in South Africa). The project is organized around the following four (04) components: (i) Capacity building for sustainable exploitation of mineral resources; (ii) Internships for the acquisition of practical and field knowledge; (iii) Analytical work on the main issues of sustainability in the mining sector; and (iv) support to project management.
The project's development objective is to contribute to youth employment and inclusive economic growth in Zambia through sustainable development of mineral resources. The specific objective is to strengthen the capacity of the University of Zambia to effectively deliver a master's degree program in Sustainable Mineral Resource Development (SMRD).
The project targets two types of beneficiaries: a) some faculty from the University of Zambia's School of Mines who require knowledge and skills development in Sustainable Mineral Resource Development (SMRD); and b) graduate students who are required to participate in the Master's program in SMRD.
