Zimbabwe is currently facing additional vulnerability challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is now affecting practically every country in the world. The proposed operation aims to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in supply of medical equipment and supplies as well as training of targeted frontline responders and provision of handwashing facilities. The proposed project is in response to the Government of Zimbabwe’s (GoZ’s) request submitted to the Bank in March 2020 and it is consistent with the Bank’s and the GoZ’s efforts to address the enormous COVID-19-related challenges facing the country, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas. Implementation timeframe: 2 years, 2020-2022 and the total project cost is UA 11.11 million. The expected outcomes are: (a) improved Global Health Security Index for Zimbabwe; (b) increased skills in COVID-19 prevention and management protocols for populations in targeted regions; and (c) increased access to COVID-19 hand washing facilities in Harare, satellite townships and other COVID-19 affected regions.
The objective of the project is to contribute to limiting the morbidity and the mortality rates related to COVID-19 in Zimbabwe through the strengthening of the health system to effectively respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The direct beneficiaries are primarily: (i) the populations in the targeted high-density urban suburbs in Harare and satellite townships for improved access to handwashing facilities;(ii) the 4,500 community and village healthcare workers who will be trained on COVID-19 prevention and case management protocols –60% of these will be women who are at the frontline of community care giving;and (iii) doctors and nurses in targeted health facilities who will benefit from PPEs and reduced infection rates. The indirect beneficiaries will include all the 680,000 population of the targeted suburbs and townships.
